NEVER HEARD OF HIM

The goal was to create a solid sounding, stripped down acoustic disc.
One dusty August, we set up to record the souls of the songs - no tricks, no overdubs, just one live take each.
We went to town with a handful of mics, a couple of guitars, one patched up lyric book and a lot of green tea.
The result was an intimate string of music reminiscent of a coffee shop afternoon setlist.

I really appreciate the support of anyone who takes the time to enjoy my music.
You can listen to the album for free on this site, or download it for $10 and take it anywhere.
You can also purchase an actual disc from me in person, if you happen to catch me playing live somewhere.

Enjoy these 7 tracks spanning an assorted 4 years of my songwriting life.

1. slim jim.

written by the little antisocial voice inside my head.
the first song on the disc is also the first one we attacked in the studio.
it was recorded on a large bodied Yamaha acoustic guitar.
slim jim has become a classic opener for my live sets.

2. TV.
written by the same voice, the day my T.V. died.
this often-requested song was honestly written in all of ten minutes.
over the years it has gone through many noisy incarnations,
such as the angst-ridden garage band anthem it began life as.

3. pretty.
a love song written in Nicaragua.
pretty originally appeared on my first album, Epiphany.
it was written in 2006, during a school trip to work at an orphanage.
this version was recorded on a parlour-sized Seagull guitar.

4. lapse.
a song about alien abduction.
another song originally written in Nicaragua for Epiphany,
deep in the grip of culture shock and psychoactive malaria medication.
the song was recorded with a kick-drum mic in the room to capture ambient bass.

5. 1966.
a once young love song.
written several years ago for a sweetheart I knew as Twiggy.
it was also the first song I ever played for her in person.
my mother lent me her beautiful Godin classical guitar for this recording.

6. birds.
when its over and its time to leave the nest.
the chord progression in this song appeared all at once, fully formed.
it was written at the end of high school, when everything seems to change at once.
this was also recorded on the small-bodied Seagull.

7. polaroid.
life laid out like the pages of a photo album.

this song was a marked turning point in my songwriting,
as well as an experiment in playing rhythm and lead at the same time.
to date, my favorite version of this song features acoustic guitar and saxophone.
