is ryan murphy.
tendrils of reggae, irish folk, and the blues weave through weird chords and rich vocals. lyrically driven, his dark honesty is easily washed down with endless sass-on-tap. his rhythmic and intricate guitar work, inseperable from his melodic vocal lines, will find you humming catchy tunes for days. The Full Murphy lights up those neglected neurons in the back of your brain begging for some stimulation.
playing coffee shops and assorted venues around the okanagan, ryan has been winning over crowds with nothing but his voice, his guitar, and his unforgettable presence. 3-time vet of the Komasket Music Festival, he is no stranger to the stage. past projects include the No Name Band, Fuckla, Sountrack to no Album, and Salvino, jamming in crowded bars and smoky outdoor shows.
ryans first album, Epiphany, was an independent self-directed project for Global Education. it was an outlet for the culture shock and subsequent side-effects after a volunteer trip to nicaragua, the second poorest country in the americas. it focused on the contrast between day and night.. between being asleep and waking up. this was followed up with Episode, a 3o-minute medley of songs from the album performed with a band. the show played for two weeks, complete with a video projection and actors on the stage. it expanded on the bleak contrasts from the album by adding imagery of poverty and war juxtaposed by ads and infomercials. the show won a district scholarship in 2oo7. 'we put the berry back in the strawberry rhubarb pie,' murphy said, on the final night of the matinée his show was a part of. 'episode was worth the classes i dropped to pull it off.' the following few years of songwriting ended up headlining one june night (the 4-year anniversary of the Epiphany release..) at the Cliffs Cafe in enderby. the place had the right vibe, the right lighting, and the right attitude. bill kirkpatrick opened the night with a haunting set of originals. most of the people invited to the show by Adam, the owner of the cliffs, declined attending because they had "never heard of him". when that after-hours chat drove home with the windows open on the cool empty highway of the early morning, the new acoustic EP was born. take a listen to the stripped down cores of these songs here; [ Never Heard of Him ] promoting the impending completion of the new album, ryan has been playing shows like a shadow singing of an approaching meteor, opening up some great nights headlined by groups like Modern Folk, Poor Little Rich Girl, Joal Kamps, and Clayvious. now a 2-time vet of the Grindrod Music & Arts Festival, as well as an applicant for Canada's Got Talent, ryan is working on a new self-directed project; [ OCTOBEATS ] . featuring newer songs recorded in strange and interesting ways, in strange and interesting places, this album takes on the essence of a deep sea creature constantly changing its shape. ryan plays all the instruments, from the egg-shaker to the 5-string octobass, continuously updating the online project to feature updated mixes, additional instruments, and of course new songs. the result is an as-it-happens view of the basement recording process, free of studio time constraints and ripe with mistakes, because whats life without mistakes? |
